A Jumble of Ribbons

Standard

“She always felt lost
And it was beautiful
Not knowing how
She’d find herself.
For everything she knew
Was a speck of something greater.
And it was just a matter of time
Till all of her made sense”

I’m made of a jumble of bright silk ribbons
And somewhere along the way
A ribbon was snagged
Perhaps it was caught by Jupiter
In the vortex of his violent eye
And so, as I move about life
I slowly unwind
I feel the pieces of me
As they fall, scatter and evade
I hesitate to give chase
I won’t be led backwards
I suppose I’ll have to create new silk threads
In which to house my weary soul
But first, tell me
Was that drink made for me?
Do you remember how I love Gatsby?

Someplace Beautiful

Standard

“Warm me
Like sunlight
And soothe me
Like rain.
Burn me
With passion
And steal away
The pain.”

Spring is peeking around the corner
Can you see her?
There may still be cold days
But we live in the moment,
You and I,
Come Jupiter
And put your hand in mine
I’ll keep you warm
Even when spring is hard to find.

Heartlines

Standard

“In Japan
Broken objects
Are often repaired with gold.
The flaw is seen
As a unique piece
Of the object’s history,
Which adds to it’s beauty.
Consider this
When you feel broken.”

How beautiful your flaws are to me
Lovely, the scars cleaved by time
I will line your mistakes with gold,
my love
No need to hide
I adore your golden threads
As they illuminate
What once lay shattered
Taste and savor the perfection
Of every moment
Don’t dwell in what was
Give no thought to what will be
One breath to the next is all we have
Not even that is a promise
And so our mended brokenness
Shall brightly glow
Come darling
Etch your own line of gold
Into the ivory of my skin
Add your own song
To the chorus of my sin.

Instinct

Standard

“She always had that about her
That look of otherness,
Of eyes that see things
Much too far
And of thoughts that wander
Off the edge of the world.”

“My instincts are usually right,”
He said.
“What do your instincts say about me?”
She wanted to ask
And didn’t.
She’d prefer to wander,
Alone, in her own musings
Than to risk him seeing her as
another…
brainless follower.

Infinite

Standard

“Do you remember still the falling stars
that like swift horses through the heavens raced
and suddenly leaped across the hurdles
of our wishes–do you recall?”

Oh! There you are!
Flowing with the night
Under the same star
Burning in our sight

An August harvest moon
Hangs heavy in a gown of coal
As cicadas hum and croon
Their music enfolds me as I stroll

Are you watching the sky?
The universe is a grand show
If I tip forward would I fly?
Fingertips reach, catching the flow

You see what I see
Perhaps you dream the same dream
Of all the lives that we could be
Ah, but things are not as they seem

So, in darkness I lay on still warm earth
Soft grass beneath open palm
A being of infinite worth
I breath, and I am calm.

Dismantled Love

Standard

“I love you
With every
piece of me.
I will love
And love
And love
Until I have nothing
Left,
And then
I will make more
Out of the nothing
That lives
Where everything
Once did.
I would
Dismantle me
To put you
Back together
Again.”

If only it were possible
To reach through a screen
Touch that moment
My soul was captured
Exposed
For a split second
Caught in a photo
And yell through time and space
Glare into those ocean-like eyes
Shake and slap
My own
Dream filled
Empty
Head
“You are destroying yourself!!”
Ah, but I knew then
Didn’t I?
Yes, and I know still…
I will do it again.

I will love you
With a passion
That glistens on your skin
Like holy gold dust
At a tent revival
I will love you
Even when you don’t
And the selfless purity of it
Is your beacon
And my bondage
I am yours
To crush
Or caress.

Love Song

Standard

“How can I keep my soul in me
So that it doesn’t touch your soul?
How can I raise it high enough,
Past you, to other things?

I would like to shelter it,
Among remote lost objects,
In some dark and silent place
That doesn’t resonate when
Your depths resound.

Yet everything that touches us,
Me and you,
Takes us together like a
Violin’s bow.
Which draws one voice out of two
Separate strings.

Upon what instrument
Are we two spanned?
And what musician
Holds us in his hand?
Oh sweetest song”

What is it that draws me to you?
Did I not notice
That moment you slipped a string
Around my rib?
Just below my breast
and trembling heart
Slowly
You pull me in
Around that curled finger
And just as you graze my skin,
Setting fire to all denial,
Roughly I’m flung to the wind

You didn’t notice the extra string
And so
Slowly
I pull you in
Oh, the symphonies I’ll create
With the strings of passion
Connecting you and I.
