A Creature of Flight

Standard

“She was broken from moment to moment, watching her world collide she felt lost inside herself. She fell apart for a passion that flamed beneath her. She waited and died a hundred times, it dripped from her pores. The moment she let go, she soared over the stillness like the star she was born to be.”

And I was a creature of flight
Dancer in realms of air
Beloved of clouds and light
Silken feathers, golden and fair

And I was a creature both violent and free
Hurricane breath with tsunami eyes
Daughter of the tempest breeze
Rainbow phoenix in blazing skies

And I was a creature of the stars
Infinitesimal child of night
Pulled along the dust trails of Mars
For all was beautiful within my sight.

The Riverside

Standard

“Down by the water the riverbed
Somebody calls you somebody says
Swim with the current and float away
Down by the river everyday

Oh my God I see how everything is torn in the river deep
And I don’t know why I go the way
Down by the riverside”

Lovely darkness presses against his window
Gently, silken tendrils float toward him
As he thrashes once…
Twice
Then lightning flashes and
Darkness holds her breath as together
They are pulled into a dream
Or vision
They swirl with the wind
Toys in its palm
Through a veil of midnight

And then…

White skin glistens before his eyes
Darkness walks on ahead
Clothed only with the moonlight
That pools on her glowing skin
And a crown of stars at her brow
Sending glistening sparks
Through long fiery hair

Slowly… she glides
Fingers trailing the rough bark
Of the evergreen trees
Her scent like a mountain breeze
Cool and wild
Sweet and frightening

A sound like thunder is rolling
And crashing ahead
A glance over her shoulder
And their eyes meet
He steps back at the green fire
Inside those eyes
Fire that pierces his core
Knows his depths
And does not find him lacking
“Come with me and witness my rebirth”

Suddenly, the thunder is before them
In the form of massive water falls
That stretch up into the clouds
The water roars as it crashes down
Onto the rocks
And a river rushes from it

Darkness continues forward
Pausing only at his gasp behind her
“No! You will be torn apart!”
The embers of her eyes
Flash to his again
Giving no answer but a small smile
And a slight wave of her fingers
Freezing him in place

With slow reverence she steps
Onto a path of glowing stones
Leading to those monstrous falls
Her arms raised in supplication
He thrashes as her fingers reach
And finally touch the water
Then pauses as her joyful laughter
Rings through him,
And truly begins to watch

Darkness she had been
Beautiful as a Lily
deadly as night shade
He watches as, indeed,
She crumples beneath the rush
Watches as darkness begins to crack
Sundering then melting away

The water is washing
Purifying
Every single dark splotch
That he’d never noticed before now
Never understood that as she moved
Through the world
She took on the darkness of others
Cleansing them
Just as the water now cleansed her

Blinding light erupts
from her open mouth and eyes
Tears stream down his cheeks
At the sight of her brilliance
Ivory wings erupt from the falls
And there’s a piercing cry
As the great white falcon
Leaps into the sky.

Queen of Peace

Standard

“She slept with wolves without fear,
For the wolves knew a lion was among them.”

I am a queen of peace
I know no other way
When it seemed the scream would never cease
In my mind, I’d hide and play

Mama, when I’d see that hatred in your eyes
I found refuge in my tree
My only comfort from your lies
And so…
I became the love that I had to seek

I am stronger than you
For you harbor so much hate
I know your words are not my truth
A lover and a dreamer, that is my fate

I am a queen of peace
I know no other way
So I shed you, like Autumn’s dead leaves
And spring to life, like the flowers in May.

This Demanding Pain

Standard

“That’s the thing about pain, it demands to be felt.”

Yes, pain demands to be felt
An inferno arising from within
Refuses to be ignored
No point in placation

I have learned to let tears fall
Wherever they may
And I will feel no shame
In my submission
I give myself over to the tidal wave

Total surrender
As up up up…I’m carried
Then, reaching the crest, I’m pushed
Not over, but back
To fall and crash

Churned with the rocks and shells
I become smooth
Baptized in the salt of the seas
I’m one with the water
And the breeze

From below now calm tides
I see the brilliant dawn
Violently
I break the surface
Breathing life in sobbing gulps

Ivory wings unfurl
And I begin to rise
Wait and you will see
The dawn within my eyes.

Nostalgia

Standard

“All my life
My heart has sought
A thing I cannot name”

Hello again, old friend
Carrying with you that old ache,
Like a rheumatism

Yes,
I recognize you, unkind familiar,
as you gnaw at my belly.
My throat clenches and my heart quickens.

Longing,
Like a scorching lava
Oozing through my veins.
What is it, this desire that pulls
At platinum threads?

I thrash and scream
And it’s a silent roar
Through my confused mind.

You are never kind enough
to enlighten,
Old friend.

In the barren halls of my thoughts,
One word echos:

Something…
Something…
Something…

What you are just floats,
as always,
on the cusp of consciousness.
You flit out of the reach
Of my groaning attempts at capture.

Yes,
Hello again, old friend.
You cabalistic ghost.
You offer no explanation,
and no comfort.

I’m forever alone with the sense of an unwitnessed miracle,
And a happiness left unfulfilled.

Powerless, I wrap my arms around my aching heart.
The echo comes as a tidal wave,
beating me as it crashes.
And so,
Bruised, bloodied, scarred,
I cling to that one word as an anchor

Something…
Something…
Something…

Little Golden Bird

Standard

“Who knows? Perhaps the same bird
echoed through both of us
yesterday, separate, in the evening.”

Little bird of gold
Why do you never fly?
How can you sit so bold
With gathering storms in sky?

I’m awaiting the sun
For he never fails to visit me
Very soon he’ll come
Sit and wait, you’ll see

But are the storms worth the light?
My doubt was very plain
Little bird, suffering in my sight
It didn’t seem quite sane

Oh yes! Every moment of the storm is worth his rays
Wait for the clouds to pass, And I’ll sing a song
What’s suffering compared to his warmth upon my face?
He’ll hear my call dear, it shan’t be long

And sure enough she began to sing
The winds and rain did cease
I found a small hope upon which to cling
Oh let the sun come for her, please!

And it was as if the heavens broke
The light was blinding to behold
Then I heard the sun as he spoke
It was all as I’d been told

He wrapped the small lovely dove
In golds of the brightest hue
The storms had been worth his love
Her words had proven true.
